youtube.com/@<handle>

YouTube username checker

A YouTube username checker tells you whether a handle is already taken at youtube.com/@<handle>. UsernameLookup loads that URL as a logged out visitor, returns found, free or unknown with the channel link, and checks the same name on video, social and streaming sites.

01 url forms

YouTube has several kinds of channel URL

Channels have collected different URL styles over the years. Only one of them is the handle you would claim today, and that is the one the checker tests. The table explains the others so a link someone sends you makes sense.

YouTube channel URL forms and what they mean
URL form What it is Checked here
youtube.com/@handle The unique handle every channel has. It is what you claim when you set up a channel. yes
youtube.com/channel/UC... The permanent channel ID, a generated string, not something you choose. no
youtube.com/c/name An older custom URL. Still resolves for some channels. no
youtube.com/user/name The oldest username style from early accounts. no
02 handle rules

YouTube handle rules

YouTube handles are more generous than most networks, which is a trap for creators who want the same name everywhere. A handle that uses a hyphen and a period is valid on YouTube and impossible on X.

length
3 to 30 characters
characters
letters, digits, underscores, hyphens, periods
uniqueness
one handle per channel, unique across YouTube
display name
separate and not unique
portable handle
letters, digits and underscores, 4 to 15 characters, fits X, TikTok and Twitch too

Securing a channel name before you upload

01

Check the handle, not the title

Two channels can share a title. Only one can own the handle. Search the exact string you want after the @.

02

Look at the neighbours

Video creators usually also need the name on short video apps, a streaming site, Instagram and a link page. The checker covers the video and social categories in one run.

03

Add the domain

Switch on availability to see the 25 domain extensions as well. A matching .com or .tv is easier to get before a channel grows.

04

Claim in one sitting

Availability changes. Register the open handles the same day, hardest network first.

05

Watch for copies later

Popular channels attract lookalikes with _official or _giveaway suffixes. Monitoring flags them and links the platform report page.

The username availability page goes deeper on claiming names across platforms and domains. If your audience is on short video, run the TikTok username finder next, and streamers should also try the Twitch username checker.

04 unknown results

When YouTube does not give a clear answer

YouTube serves visitors in some regions a consent page before showing a channel, and it can slow down repeated anonymous requests. Its pages are also heavy and change often. Any of these can turn a clear answer into an ambiguous one.

When the reply matches neither a channel nor the missing channel page, you get unknown and the link. The rest of the run is unaffected, so the video and social results around it still come back.

found

A channel answered at youtube.com/@handle. You get the link.

free

YouTube returned its page for a missing channel.

unknown

Consent page, rate limit or a changed page. Open the link to check.

05 uses and limits

Who checks YouTube handles

Creators securing a name before their first upload. Brand teams making sure the company handle is not already held by an unrelated channel. Agencies preparing several channel names for a client and exporting the free combinations to CSV. Trust and safety teams that see a signup referencing a YouTube channel and want to confirm the public channel exists.

Each of these needs one fact first, is the handle in use, and then a wider view of where else the same name lives.

boundaries
  • Only the public channel URL is checked.
  • Videos, comments and subscriber lists are not collected.
  • Private and unlisted content stays out of reach.
  • We do not try to work out who runs a channel.
  • Handles can be excluded at opt-out.

Questions about the YouTube username checker

What is the difference between a YouTube handle and a channel name?

The handle is the unique name in the URL, youtube.com/@handle. The channel name is the display title shown on the channel and does not have to be unique. The checker tests the handle, because that is what has to be free.

Does the checker find channels with old /c/ or /user/ URLs?

It checks the @handle URL, which every channel now has. Older custom and user URLs still work on YouTube for some channels, but they do not decide whether a handle is free.

Why might YouTube come back unknown?

In some regions YouTube shows a consent page before any channel, and it can slow down repeated anonymous requests. If the reply cannot be read either way, the row is unknown with a link.

Can I check a YouTube handle together with domains?

Yes. Turn on availability in the search box and the same name is also checked on 25 domain extensions through DNS and registry records, next to YouTube and the other platforms.
