UsernameLookup

availability / handles and domains side by side

Domain and username checker

A domain and username checker tests one name on social platforms and on domain extensions in the same search. UsernameLookup checks public profile addresses on the main networks and 25 extensions through DNS and RDAP, then shows free, taken or unknown for each so you can claim the whole set.

01 why both

A brand name is only free when the handle and the domain are

Most naming disasters are found late. The team picks a name, buys the .com, prints the deck, and only then discovers that the Instagram handle belongs to a dormant account and the TikTok name to a competitor. Or the opposite: every social handle is free, but the domain is parked by someone asking a five figure price.

Checking both in one place avoids that. You see, for each candidate, which platforms are open, which extensions are free, and where the gaps are. A name that is free on the networks your audience uses and has a clean .com or a credible alternative is a name you can launch with.

The checker is built for that comparison. Paste one name to see the full matrix, or on the Investigator plan paste up to 100 names and compare them side by side.

02 how domains are checked

How the domain side reaches an answer

  1. step 1

    DNS first

We look for name server and address records. A domain with live DNS is registered, so the answer is taken without asking anyone else.

  2. step 2

    Registry through RDAP

When DNS is silent, we ask the registry over RDAP, the structured successor to WHOIS that registrars rely on. A not found reply means the name is not registered.

  3. step 3

    Unknown when unclear

Some registries do not answer RDAP or limit requests. In that case the extension is marked unknown instead of guessed, with the time of the check.

The platform side works like our username availability check: the public profile address is requested and read with the signal each site uses for a missing profile.

03 extensions

Which extension fits which kind of brand

The .com is still the default people type. When it is gone, the right alternative depends on what you are building and who needs to trust it.

Common domain extensions and the brands they suit
Extension Usually suits Keep in mind
.com Any business selling to a general audience The name people guess first, worth securing even if you use another
.io Developer tools and technical products Familiar to engineers, less known to the wider public
.ai Products built around machine learning Often priced higher at renewal than at first registration
.co Startups and short brand names Easily mistyped as .com, so own both if you can
.app and .dev Apps and developer projects Require HTTPS on every site by registry rule
.gg and .tv Gaming and streaming brands Strong fit with Twitch and gaming handles
.store and .shop Online stores Make the purpose of the site obvious in the address
04 checklist

A short launch checklist for a new name

Availability changes daily. Treat the result as a window and claim what matters in one sitting.

  • Check three to five candidate names together, not one at a time.
  • Prefer a name free on the networks your buyers use over one free everywhere you will never post.
  • Register the domain first, it is the asset you fully control.
  • Create the handles the same day, starting with the platform where the name was hardest to get.
  • After launch, watch for lookalike accounts with brand impersonation monitoring.
05 plans

Name checks on every plan

Your first search is a one-time demo. Every paid plan includes all 25 extensions: Pro covers 300 availability checks a month, Investigator 2,000 with bulk lists of up to 100 names and CSV export, and the brand plans 10,000 or 50,000. Plans start at $24 a month billed yearly. Compare them on username lookup pricing.

Once the name is yours, brand impersonation monitoring keeps watch for lookalike handles, and the username lookup API exposes the same availability data to your own naming tools.

06 faq

Questions about checking domains and usernames together

How does the domain and username checker work?

Enter a name once. We open the public profile address of that name on each platform to see whether it is taken, and check 25 domain extensions by looking for DNS records and asking the registry through RDAP when DNS is silent. Both answers appear on one result page.

Which domain extensions are checked?

Twenty five popular extensions, including .com, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .net, .org, .dev, .me, .gg, .tv, .xyz and .store. All of them are included on every paid plan.

Can a domain show as available and still be unavailable to buy?

Yes, sometimes. Premium names held by a registry, recently expired names in a grace period and reserved words can show no records and still not be open for regular registration. Treat available as a strong signal and confirm at your registrar.

Do you sell domains or reserve usernames?

No. We check and report. Registering the domain and creating the accounts stays with you, through your own registrar and the platforms themselves.
