Acceptable use policy

What you may and may not do with usernamelookup.com and its results. This policy is part of the terms of service.

1. Purpose of this policy

UsernameLookup shows where a username has a public profile. That information protects brands, customers and platforms, and it could hurt people if misused. This policy sets the boundaries. It applies to every account, every plan, the API and monitoring, and it is part of the terms of service. The policy is enforced by the administrator of the usernamelookup.com service.

2. Allowed uses

  • Brand protection, including finding accounts that impersonate your company, products or executives and reporting them to platforms.
  • Fraud prevention and trust and safety work on your own platform or for your own customers.
  • Security research on your own assets and on assets you are authorised to assess.
  • Securing your own names, handles and domains before a launch or a rebrand.
  • Journalism and academic or professional research carried out within the law.

3. Forbidden uses

You may not use the service or its results to:

  • stalk, harass, threaten or intimidate anyone;
  • dox anyone, meaning publish or collect identifying information about a person to expose them;
  • build profiles of private persons or track their activity across sites;
  • locate or contact a person who does not want to be contacted, including former partners, family members or people protected by a court order;
  • make or support decisions about employment, housing, credit, insurance or similar eligibility, or discriminate against anyone;
  • bypass, test or work around the opt-out list, for example by searching variants of a suppressed username to reach the same person;
  • scrape, crawl or copy the service by automated means outside the official API and its limits;
  • resell, redistribute or publish raw results as a data product or a people search service;
  • carry out unlawful surveillance or any other activity that breaks the law that applies to you or to the person concerned.

4. Respect for opt-out requests

People can remove their username from results through the opt-out page. Every lookup checks that list first, and no plan can switch it off. Attempts to get around it are treated as a serious breach of this policy.

5. Your responsibility

You are responsible for having a lawful basis for your lookups and for how you store and use the results. Results are public signals, not identity verification. Do not treat a matching username as proof that two profiles belong to the same person. The security and privacy boundaries page explains what the service checks and what it never collects.

6. Enforcement

  • We monitor usage patterns that suggest abuse, such as mass lookups of private individuals or repeated searches around suppressed names.
  • We may ask you to explain the purpose of your lookups and may limit features while we review.
  • Accounts that break this policy are suspended or terminated. Payments for accounts terminated for abuse are not refunded.
  • Where the law requires it, we cooperate with competent authorities.

7. Reporting abuse

If you believe someone is using UsernameLookup to harm you or another person, write to [email protected] with the username concerned, the date and a short description of what happened. We review every report. If you want your own username removed from results, use the opt-out page, which works immediately after confirmation.

8. Changes to this policy

We update this policy when needed to protect people and the service. Material changes are announced to account holders by email before they take effect.
