The best KnowEm alternative for a business is a tool that checks a brand name on hundreds of platforms and domain extensions in one search, keeps the results, and keeps watching the name after you claim it. UsernameLookup does that across 300+ public sites and 25 domain extensions, with saved history, CSV export, lookalike alerts and an API.
KnowEm was the tool many marketers reached for when they needed to grab a brand handle everywhere at once. Today the knowem.com address no longer loads, and software directories list it as discontinued. If you had it bookmarked for your naming process, here is what to use instead, and what to look for so you do not end up rebuilding the same workflow twice.
What happened to KnowEm
KnowEm launched around 2009 as a username search across social networks, later adding domain checks and a USPTO trademark lookup. It also sold paid packages where its staff registered your brand name on hundreds of networks for you. That second part is what made it popular with agencies.
The site is now unreachable, and directories such as AlternativeTo mark it as discontinued. There has been no clear public announcement we could find, so treat any old KnowEm account or package as gone and plan your handle checks on a different tool.
Is there an alternative to KnowEm that also monitors the name?
Yes. Most remaining checkers, Namechk included, do the first half of what KnowEm did (we cover the differences on our Namechk alternative page): you type a name and see where it looks free. Fewer keep watching afterward. UsernameLookup checks the name, saves the run, and on the brand plans scans typos, homoglyphs and suffixes such as _support or official every hour, alerting you by email, Slack or webhook when a new lookalike account appears.
That matters because the risk for a brand rarely ends on launch day. The handle you claimed is safe. The handle with one swapped letter, or with "help" on the end, is the one a scammer registers to reply to your angry customers.
KnowEm alternatives compared
Here is how the common options line up for a business buyer. We list what each one is built for, including where the free tools are the better pick.
| Tool | Best for | Handles and domains | Saved history and export | Lookalike alerts | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Namechk | A quick free check of one name | Yes | Built for single searches | No | Free |
| Instant Username Search | Fast free checks on popular networks | Handles | Built for single searches | No | Free |
| Available.FYI | Waiting for one taken handle to free up | Major platforms | Watch list | Notifies when a handle frees up | Paid |
| UsernameLookup | Brand teams, agencies, trust and safety | 300+ sites plus 25 domain extensions | Every run saved with a diff, CSV on every plan | Typos, homoglyphs and suffixes, hourly on brand plans | From $24 a month billed yearly |
If you check one name a year, a free checker is the right answer and you should not pay for anything. If you run naming rounds for clients or protect a live brand, the free tools leave you copying results into a spreadsheet by hand and finding out about impersonators from your customers.
What is the best site to check username availability for a business?
For a business, the best site to check username availability is one that searches handles and domains together, handles a list of names at once and keeps a record. A single-name checker answers today's question. A team tool answers next month's too, because it shows what changed between runs and who registered what.
Look for these five things when you compare tools:
- Coverage that matches your buyers. A count of 500 networks means little if half are dead. What matters is the platforms your audience uses, plus the domain extensions you would actually buy.
- Bulk checks. Naming rounds involve 20 to 50 candidates. Checking them one at a time is where an afternoon disappears.
- Unknown is shown as unknown. Some platforms block automated checks. A good tool marks those as unknown instead of guessing free, which is how people end up announcing a name they cannot get.
- A record you can share. CSV for the team, a PDF report with evidence for a client or a legal file.
- Monitoring after launch. Alerts for new lookalike handles, delivered where your team already works.
Does any tool still register usernames for you like KnowEm did?
We are not aware of a mainstream replacement for KnowEm's done-for-you registration packages, and there is a good reason to do it yourself anyway. When an outside service creates accounts on your behalf, the logins, recovery emails and two-factor devices often end up scattered. Months later nobody on your team can get into the Pinterest account that carries your brand name.
A cleaner process is to check everything in one search, then have one person on your team register the priority platforms in a single sitting using a shared company mailbox and your password manager. Our guide on how to secure a brand handle before launch walks through that sitting step by step.
How to replace KnowEm in your naming workflow
This is the routine agencies and in-house brand teams use with UsernameLookup.
- Shortlist. Paste the candidate names. On Investigator and above you can check up to 100 at once and compare them in one matrix.
- Filter to the platforms that matter. Narrow the view to social, video, developer, gaming or forum sites, depending on where your buyers spend time.
- Check the domains in the same pass. The domain and username checker tests 25 extensions next to the handles. If the .com you want is registered but unused, a domain marketplace is often the realistic way to buy it from the current owner.
- Claim and export. Register the free handles the same day and export the run to CSV so you have a dated record of what was free when you claimed it.
- Turn on monitoring. Add the final name to brand impersonation monitoring so lookalike accounts reach you before they reach your customers.
How much does a KnowEm replacement cost?
UsernameLookup's Pro plan costs $24 a month billed yearly, or $49 month to month. It covers 300 lookups, 300 availability checks with all 25 domain extensions, saved history with a diff, CSV export, three monitored usernames and 1,000 API calls a month. Investigator is $149 a month and adds bulk lists of 100 names, the likely same person score, case notes and PDF reports for three seats.
Brand Monitoring, at $499 a month, is the plan that covers what KnowEm customers usually wanted protection from: 10 brands, lookalike generation for each one, hourly scans, 5,000 alerts a month across email, Slack and webhook, and a case board with pre-filled report links for each platform. Full details are on the pricing page.
Is KnowEm still accurate if I find a cached copy?
No. Any cached or archived KnowEm result is a snapshot from the day it was taken, and username availability changes daily as accounts are created, renamed and deleted. Platforms also change their profile address formats, which breaks older checkers quietly. Run a fresh search before you announce a name or file a trademark.
How to test a KnowEm alternative before you pay
Run the same three names through every tool on your shortlist and compare the answers line by line. Use your current brand name, a name you know is taken on Instagram and X, and a nonsense string that should be free almost everywhere. A good checker returns found for the first two on the platforms where they exist, free for the nonsense string, and unknown wherever a platform refused to answer. A weak one shows free for everything it could not reach.
Then look at what happens after the search. Can you save the run and come back to it next week? Does the second run show what changed? Can you export the result in a format your client or legal team will accept? Can a colleague see the same history without sharing a login? Those questions separate a tool you will use every month from one you will forget about after launch.
Finally, check the monitoring on a name you already own. Add your brand, wait a day and see what the tool flags. If it finds the variant handles you already knew about, such as a fan account or an old regional page, it is looking in the right places. If it finds nothing at all on a known brand, it is probably checking too few variants.
You can run that test on UsernameLookup right now from the username search on our homepage. The first lookup is a one-time demo with the full result, profile links and the free or taken status on every site we check.
Which KnowEm alternative should you pick?
Pick a free checker if you need a quick look at one name for a personal project. Pick a tool with history, bulk checks and monitoring if the name belongs to a company, a client or a product you are about to launch. That second group is who UsernameLookup is built for, and your first lookup is a one-time demo, so you can see the full result for your own brand name before you choose a plan.
